Alvin Darrell West, affectionately known as Al, was a beacon of warmth both in spirit and through his life's work. Born on December 21, 1962, in Havre de Grace, MD.
Al's journey through this world was marked by an unwavering commitment to spreading love and laughter. His earthly chapter came to a close on January 4, 2025, in Charleston, SC, after a battle with colon cancer. His departure from this world leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
Al was a man of many admirable qualities, but it was his loving nature that truly set him apart. His wife, Sandy West, stood by his side as a testament to his unwavering commitment to family—a bond unbroken by his passing.
Al's siblings; Darla Hypes, Tammy Blair, Sheila Powell, and Raymond Cullum, and his son, Joshua Parrish reflect segments of his compassionate spirit. The family tree he leaves behind, adorned with grandchildren; Chloe Parrish and Aiden Parrish, numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces, stands tall and strong, deeply rooted in the love he so generously gave.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Georgia Anita Cullum, father, Raymond F. Cullum, Jr. and birth father, Alvin Darrell West.
Professionally, Al was the proud owner of his own AC & Heating Company, a venture that not only showcased his entrepreneurial spirit but also his dedication to service and community. His company was more than a business; it was an extension of his character—reliable, efficient, and always ready to bring comfort to others.
Described by those who knew him best as loving, kind, and funny, Al had an innate ability to illuminate the positive in every situation. He lived by the principle that life is not about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away—a sentiment captured in the inspiring words of Maya Angelou.
Al's life was a tapestry of such breathtaking moments, woven together by his passion for life and the joy he found in every day.
As a motivational speaker would say, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. Al embodied this philosophy through his activities and his heart. He was a man who understood the power of giving, the strength in unity, and the beauty of a shared laugh.
Al's memory will continue to be a guiding light—a reminder to embrace life with open arms, to cherish our loved ones, and to live each day with a kind heart. His story encourages us to build connections, to lend a hand where we can, and to always leave a place warmer than we found it.
In the silent moments beneath the stars, around the embers of a bonfire, we will remember Al. We will smile, we will share, and we will live inspired by the man whose life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the boundless potential for joy in the simplicity of being together.
Alvin Darrell West's story does not end here. It lives on in the laughter of his family, the success of his business, and the countless lives he touched. Let us honor his memory by living fully, loving deeply, and always finding a reason to smile.
Al’s Celebration of Life will be held on June 30, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. (est) at the Wyndam Garden of Summerville, 120 Holiday Dr. Summerville, SC 29483.
