Angus Smith, Jr.

December 22, 1920 — February 4, 2017

Angus Stuart Smith, Jr., 96, of Johns Island, SC, and widower of Minnie Pace Smith, who passed away January 22, 2014, entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2017.

He was born December 22, 1920 in Charleston, SC, to the late Angus Stuart Smith and Frances Gunn Smith.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Murray Vocational High School and honorably served his county in the US Navy during WWII. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard after 26 years. He was a lifetime member of Orange Masonic Lodge and an avid ham radio operator. Mr. Smith was an eternal optimist who truly enjoyed life and always provided for his family. He was an animal enthusiast from the time he was young - catching pigeons at night from the top of the Custom’s House, raising and racing homing pigeons, keeping African pygmy goats and many species of birds (ducks, geese, pheasants and chickens), ponies and horses. At one time, he even had a pet raccoon. His family will lovingly remember him for his sense of humor and his numerous all-consuming hobbies.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Angus S. Smith III; his sisters, Frances Fike and Dot Fabian and his brother, Clyatt Smith.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” P. Smith, DVM and her husband Wayne N. Rhea of Wadmalaw Island, SC; and his sons, Richard “Rick” L. Smith and Wayne S. Smith of Johns Island, SC.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Michelle Childs, who cared for both Mr. and Mrs. Smith over the last five and a half years. Her devotion and care made it possible for them to spend their remaining years comfortably in their own home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A graveside memorial service with interment is being planned for March 15, 2017, which would have been Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s 70th wedding anniversary.
