Barbara P. Burns

Barbara Jean Pharis Burns, 74, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered eternal rest at her home on Sunday, September 11, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born to Ralph and Helen Pharis on August 8, 1948, in Jacksonville, Florida.

She was a 1966 graduate of McClenaghan High School.  She worked as the Bookkeeper at Palmetto Tire Service until she became a full-time mother and homemaker in 1972. Once her children were older, Barbara earned her Associates Degree in Nursing at Florence-Darlington Technical College and worked as a Registered Nurse in Florence and Myrtle Beach, SC.

She was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, church, and community.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Florence, SC, and more recently, a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. She was passionate about supporting her community through many avenues. She dedicated years of service volunteering for the Florence Area Humane Society, where she worked as an Animal Cruelty Investigator.  Barbara was also a member of the Junior League of Florence and the Friends of Florence Museum.

She was a horse enthusiast and loved showing her horse, Texas. She cherished animals and instilled in her children and grandchildren the loving reward of pet companionship. Barbara was an avid fisherwoman who enjoyed fishing and crabbing the creeks of Cherry Grove Beach. She had a fantastic smile, a heart of gold, and was, in one word –“Fabulous”.

Barbara is preceded in death by Ralph Pharis (father), Helen Pharis (mother), and Diane Pharis (sister). She is survived by Brad Burns (Lyndsay) and Leslie Burns (Scott Wallace) and her grandchildren Ainsley Burns, Walker Burns, and Veronica Wallace. She will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 18th, from 2-4 pm at 1880 Rugby Lane, Charleston, SC 29407. The family is planning a celebration of Barbara’s life, to be held Florence, SC at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Florence Area Humane Society.
