Catherine “Cathy†Ginn Berg, 64, of James Island died Wednesday March 2, 2016 after a long illness. Born in Charleston on March 5, 1951, Cathy was the daughter of Joseph W. Ginn Jr. and Anne Thomas Ginn. She graduated from Cardinal Newman High School in Columbia, SC and obtained her nursing degree from Trident Technical College. She excelled in her career as an OR Registered Nurse at St. Francis Hospital, and was once named the hospital’s “Nurse of the Year.†Since 1969, Cathy had been a member of the Church of the Nativity, where she served as lector, Eucharistic Minister and usher. In her capacity as an R.N., she was a member of DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) and bravely responded to several disasters, including Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. Cathy is survived by her father, Joseph W. Ginn Jr. and step-mother, Eileen S. Ginn, both of James Island; sister, Virginia G. McCarter (Matt) of Marathon, FL; brother, Joseph W. Ginn III (Ann) of James Island; nieces, Beth G. Smith (Elsen) of Columbia, SC and Jennifer K. Ginn of Charleston; nephew, A.J. Willard of Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska; great-nephew, Wyatt G. Smith of Columbia, SC; great-nieces, Isabelle R. Smith and Grace A. Smith, both of Columbia; aunts, Juanita G. Schutt and Jean A. Thomas, both of Charleston. She also leaves behind numerous cousins and friends and her beloved dog, Eugene. A funeral mass for Cathy Ginn Berg will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 11, 2016 at The Church of the Nativity, 1061 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
