Charles A Gates III

Charles A. Gates III, 82, died at home surrounded by love and family on January 22, 2015 in Mt. Pleasant. Born January 21, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois he was the son of Charles Jr. and Edith Gates. He served in the Army and graduated from Iowa State University, where he played football. On July 19, 1958 he married Barbara Anderson, his loving wife of 56 years and they had three children. His career was in data processing, working primarily in the banking industry in Indianapolis. After retiring, he moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 2001 and summered in Wisconsin at his beloved Fence Lake. Chuck was a devoted family man who loved golfing. He was kind, funny, honest, and strong. He was a member of 1st Scots Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara (Babs) Gates. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Doug Gates (Linda) of Avon Lake, Ohio, daughter Cathy Hamilton(Jim) of Cary Illinois, and son Michael Gates (Phyllis) of Mt. Pleasant; six wonderful grandchildren, Drew Hamilton, Rachel Gates, Ryan Hamilton, Christine Gates, Wil Gates, and Ben Gates. A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 3:00PM at 1st Scots Presbyterian Church located at 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Charleston, 4975 LaCross Road, North Charleston, SC 29406, 1st Scots Presbyterian Church, or the Jimmy V.
