Cliffton "Cliff" Stanley Peacock, 70, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
Born on October 21, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, Cliff was a son of Mary B. Peacock (Buchanan) and Stewart Peacock.
He attended Boston University where he studied painting under Philip Guston. Cliff's artwork was well respected within the art world. He received several prestigious awards, including three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, two Massachusetts Artist Fellowships, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, a South Carolina Fellowship, a Gottlieb Foundation Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 1993 the Prix de Rome from the American Academy in Rome.
In 1991 Cliff relocated to Charleston, SC, to work at the College of Charleston where he taught painting and drawing for thirty-three years. There he met Barbara Duval, Professor of Art, and they formed a relationship which lasted for many years. In addition to being an acclaimed painter, Cliff was an artist in the classic tradition, in that he was a colorful storyteller, an avid reader, a musician and music enthusiast, canine lover, wizard in the kitchen, and a generous teacher whose mentorship influenced countless students and continues to inspire.
Cliff is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Barbara Duval, brothers Stewart and Robert; as well as sisters Mary Rzeszutko and Amy Tatarunas.
A memorial service will held at a later date.
