CHARLESTON – Donald (Donnie) G. Beckum, 69, passed away on July 26, 2014, at his home, surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness. A graveside service will be held at Live Oak Memorial Gardens on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11 am. Donnie was born in Charleston on November 28, 1944, the son of the late John and Betty Beckum of Hanahan. A graduate of Hanahan High School, he attended The Citadel as a Veteran Student. He served in the U.S. Army and made 3 tours of Vietnam. After completing his military service, he worked at Lockheed-Georgia for 33 ½ years and retired in 1998. An avid hunter, Donnie loved spending time at his little camper trailer in the woods, accompanied by his hunting club buddies and his wonderful canine companion Sweet. A beloved husband, father, son, and grandfather, Donnie was blessed with a multitude of faithful friends who were with him before sickness, during sickness, and after sickness. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Miller Beckum, his daughters Lauren Beckum Mayes (Stephen) and Leslie Anne Beckum, his three grandsons, Nicholas and Andrew Mayes and Luke Alexander Beckum, all of Charleston. He is also survived by his brother John Beckum (Frankie) of Monroe, GA, and his sister Betty Porterfield (Don) of Tallahassee, FL, and nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Carolina Hospice for its care and comfort, and a very special thank you to Roper-St. Francis/Downtown’s “Visiting Angel,†who truly touched his heart and soul when he was recently hospitalized.
