Dowdy Hardy Miller, 86, died August 12, 2015, at Presbyterian Village, Summerville, SC where she was an Alzheimer patient. Mrs. Miller had lived at the Presbyterian Home since 1987 when her husband, the Rev. Dr. John N. Miller, Sr. was called to serve as Chaplain. Her family thanks the staff of the Village, its Healthcare Unit, her physicians and many others for their personal and professional care of Mrs. Miller over the years. A native of Jason Community near Goldsboro, NC, Mrs. Miller earned the B. S. degree in Childhood Education from East Carolina University. She was inducted into the ECU Educator Hall of Fame and was nationally selected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Mrs. Miller was a Fellow at Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University where she earned the Master’s Degree. She taught in public schools of Wayne and Greene Counties, NC. Mrs. Miller is remembered as a loving wife, mother, “grand momma†and welcoming homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church USA and was honored with the Lifetime Membership Award of Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed traveling at home and abroad, and faithfully accompanied her minister husband on many appointments to “pray him throughâ€, as he always requested. She had a strong sense of family loyalty and a great appreciation for her roots in the eastern North Carolina farmlands. Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her parents, Montague Ernest, Sr., and Martha Swinson Hardy, infant brother Milan, and brother Montague Hardy Jr. (Marie). In addition to her husband she is survived by sons, the Rev. Dr. John N. Miller Jr., Summerville, and Benjamin H. Miller (Dorothy), Moncks Corner, SC, grandchildren Martha Miller Reid (Will), Ladson, SC, Laura T. Miller and Benjamin H. Miller II, both of Moncks Corner, SC, nieces Denise H. (the late Ronnie Sr.) Davis, Kernersville, NC, Pamela H. (William) Sharpe, Wilson, NC, and nephew Montague Hardy III (Tammy), Leesburg, VA, along with several great nephews and nieces. A Memorial Service is set for September 12, 2015, 1:00pm at Summerville Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will take place later at the M. E. Hardy, Sr. family plot in Fairview Cemetery, La Grange, NC. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Summerville Presbyterian Church, 407 S. Laurel St., Summerville, SC. 29483 designated to the Dowdy Hardy Miller Fund, which is used for ministry to and with children and youth in the Congregation and beyond.
