Edward J Green

Dr. Edward J. Green, devoted husband, father, grandfather, author and scholar, of Mount Pleasant, SC, died September 18th after a lengthy illness. He was born in 1924 in Frankfort, IN, to Edward and Murley Green. After graduating as Valedictorian of Frankfort High School, he served during WWII in the United States Army Officer Training Corps. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Ed pursued his education at Indiana University studying Psychology. After completing his undergraduate degree, he was accepted to graduate school at Harvard University where he was a student of E.G. Boring and B.F. Skinner. Upon receiving his PhD, Dr. Green embarked on a lifelong teaching career. He served on the faculties of Dartmouth College, Columbia University, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he was department Chair and Guerry Professor of Psychology. He was a pioneer of both Criminal Profiling and Programmed Instruction, writing books and conducting workshops in the US and abroad. Dr. Green was a lifelong scholar of many disciplines and could often be found reading a new book or having a lively discussion on subjects varying from Psychology and Linguistics to History and Religion. He authored many books and journal articles. He spoke five languages fluently and, at the age of 88, was teaching himself Mandarin Chinese. Ed was especially interested in all things Scottish and played the bagpipes in several pipe bands including the 78th Frasier Highlanders. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Fort Sumter Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Charleston, SC. Ed was known as a distinguished, elegant gentleman; a true Renaissance Man who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Dr. Green was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Ramona Thornton Green. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Sissa) of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughters Elisabeth Barclay (Rick) of Temecula, CA, and Margaret Barclay (Jack) of Birmingham, AL; sons Brian Green (Madeline) of Chattanooga, TN, and Drew Green (Cathy) of Tacoma, WA. Grandchildren include Eric and Drew Barclay of Temecula, CA; Rebecca Green of Chattanooga, TN; Sarah Green Meeks (Kolby) of Mesa, AZ; Jim Barclay of Birmingham, AL; and Will Barclay of Durham, NC. His great-granddaughter Chloe Meeks lives in Mesa, AZ. Ed was also fortunate to have a step-daughter Mary Virginia (Ginny) Mills (Joe) of Charleston, SC. A Requiem Mass will be held for the family October 1st at St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Charleston, SC, followed by a graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Mary's of the Annunciation, 89 Hasell St, Charleston, SC, 29401 or favorite charity.
