Elizabeth J. En Earl, affectionately known as Betty or Bonnie Earl, passed away at the age of 83 in Charleston, South Carolina on October 2, 2024. She was born on September 5, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was a beloved daughter of Elizabeth Sleigh Beatty and George Benjamin Beatty.
During her remarkable life, Elizabeth was a talented entertainer who captivated audiences with her musical talents. She began her singing career at the young age of 6, entertaining on radio shows, television shows, and theaters in Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, West Virginia. By 14, she had already become a professional singer and guitarist, eventually joining the renowned all girl country-western band, Abbie Neal and the Ranch Girls. Her career in musical entertainment took her all over the world, performing in prestigious venues from Alaska, Las Vegas, Canada and to Europe. She was a main room performer on cruise ships in the Bahamas, Nassau, and Freeport. She was also a vocalist for ice shows. She wowed audiences with her versatile skills as a singer, guitarist, bassist, and banjo player, leaving a lasting impact wherever she went.
Elizabeth's contributions to her community were equally impactful. She was a member of the VFW Post 445 Auxiliary and the American Legion Post 147 Auxiliary. She was a member of the South Carolina Arts Commission Roster and Young Audiences. She collaborated on the popular jazz radio show 'Inside Jazz,' educating countless individuals about the history and beauty of jazz music. She held concerts and residencies statewide, where she shared her love for jazz music, teaching students and teachers alike, of the history of jazz, from its early Afro-American roots to present day mainstream jazz. She would engage the class with musical activities such as playing instruments, singing, and dancing, so they could experience the excitement of performance for themselves. Her dedication to music education and performance touched the lives of many and will be remembered for years to come.
One of the traits that made Elizabeth truly special was her deep love for animals. From her childhood passion for horses to her affinity for the exotic creatures she encountered during her circus tours, she had an uncanny connection with all animals. Elizabeth's empathy and compassion for God's creatures extended to elephants, wolves, lions, and more, earning her the title of their friend in return.
Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Marie Beatty Clifford, nieces, Maria Clifford Skinner and Marilyn Clifford, nephew Mark Clifford, great-niece, Ashley Skinner and her great-nephew, Cooper Skinner. She leaves behind a legacy of music, love for animals, and dedication to her community.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at 10:00am 106 E. Erie Ave, Folly Beach, SC 29439 followed by a Committal at Holy Cross Cemetery in James Island. In lieu of flowers, donations to the local animal shelter of your choosing, are appreciated in her honor.
Elizabeth J. En Earl, known for her enchanting voice, musical prowess, and profound love for all creatures, will be dearly missed but forever remembered for the joy and inspiration she brought to all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
