Howard Edward Smith, Jr. (84) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, found eternal rest on Monday, October 15. A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Charleston, SC on Saturday, October 20th at 2:00 p.m. with family visitation following. Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jane (Wentz) Smith and three daughters; Barbara Lee (Mark) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Carolyn Gearns (Jack) of Garden City, NY and Linda Upchurch of Marietta, GA; five grandchildren; Jane Lee Scott (Jeremy), Christopher J. Gearns, Colleen W. Gearns, Sarah A. Upchurch and Kathryn C. Upchurch; three great-grandsons, Jasper S. Scott, Shepherd H. Scott and Graham E. Lee. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Stephen Edward Lee (Natalie). Howard was born on June 23, 1928, the only child of Sarah (Slifer) and Howard Smith. He grew up in Jenkintown, PA and was a graduate of Muhlenburg College. Howard met Betty at St. Matthews while stationed in Charleston during his time in the Navy. He retired from Georgia Pacific after a 45 year career in sales. In 2005 Howard and Betty left Atlanta to make their final home in Mount Pleasant. Howard will be remembered for his faith in God, his love for his family and friends and his passion for travel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Charleston, SC. (Sanctuary Restoration Fund), or to The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Atlanta, GA.
