James Barr "Jim" Guess, IV, 70, died peacefully at his home, Wednesday December 18, 2024. He was born October 15, 1954, in Orangeburg to Mary Elizabeth Duncan and James Barr Guess, III of Denmark. Jim lived his entire life in Denmark near his beloved South Edisto River.
After attending "Miss Rachel's" kindergarten Jim was educated in the public schools of Denmark. Following graduation in 1973 he attended Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College studying agriculture.
Jim worked on his family farm, Edisto Farms, planting and harvesting field crops and watermelons. He was the owner and operator of Edisto Farms Produce and Edisto Farms Hunt Club. He spent much of his time in the woods hunting and on the river fishing. His favorite pastime was sharing his passion of the outdoors by serving as a hunting and fishing guide. He enjoyed people and making new friends who he remained close to all his life. He was blessed to have many devoted friends. Jim enjoyed life to its fullest and loved to entertain at his house near the river. He was known for hosting delicious suppers and fish fries while telling tall tales.
Jim is survived by his sister Beth; niece Meg Kwiecinski, nephew Robert Kwiecinski, two great nieces Carolina Weaver and Brynley Kwiecinski all of Sumter, many devoted cousins and lifelong friends, especially Teresa Patterson, Lou-Ann Carter, Jackson Price and Virginia Sullivan.
The family would like to thank his caregiver Misty Lemay for her dedicated care and friendship.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 at 2:00 at the Denmark Country Club Pavilion, 250 Deer Crossing Road, Denmark, SC. Memorials may be made to Denmark Country Club Centennial Project, 353 Byrnes Street, Denmark, SC 29042.
