Jennie Cornelia Moore Rhodes, wife of William David Rhodes, Jr., died December 26, 2018 at The Village of Summerville. She was born on January 12, 1924 in Sumter, S.C., daughter of Marion Lartigue and Jennie Patterson Richards Moore of Dalzell, S.C. Nine days later her mother died. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Lily McKain Richards. She grew up in Sumter County, attending a 2-Teacher Dubose School. She was a graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter in 1940, the first year of Co-Education, when she was President of the student body. She attended Winthrop College for 2 years. Then during WWII, she was in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp as a student of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. For her last six months there, she joined cadet nurses from Johns Hopkins Hospital and other schools at Newton Baker General Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia. They cared for wounded servicemen who had come directly there from field Hospitals in the ETO and the Pacific. The war was over by her graduation in September of 1945. She returned to South Carolina, was married, and worked for the South Carolina State Board of Health while her husband completed his college years a veteran student at USC. Her husband's career in Engineering took the family to Dover, DE , Kinston, N.C., Richmond, VA, Signal Mountain, TN and finally to Summerville in 1973. They bought a house at Edisto Beach in 1979 and had years of enjoyment there. They moved to The Village of Summerville in 1999, joining old friends and making new ones. She was a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church. In all churches where she lived, she was very active in the Women of the Church and taught Kindergarten Sunday School for years. She was a charter board member of Help of Summerville, a former board member of the Red Cross, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter. She performed many hours of volunteer work. She was an avid reader, an enthusiastic world traveler, enjoyed playing bridge and a supporter of USC sports - Go Gamecocks! Surviving are husband William D. Rhodes, Jr., son Stephen Mayes and his wife Janice, grandsons Richards (Rick) Morse and his wife Casey, and William David IV and his wife Rachel. Great grandson Maverick (Mav) Callaway and great granddaughter Scarlet Cherie (Scout). Two nephews and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sons William David, III and his wife Judy Morse, Richards (Rick) Moore, and Robert Lartigue. Brothers Marion Lartigue, Jr., Stephen Richards, Elias Richard, and Baby Boy Albert, Sister Lily McKain Moore Dorn and her son Lt. Col. Y. Delgar (Del) Dorn, Jr., her only niece Avis Moore Rupert. Also special cousins Anna DuBose Lowe and Richards Dubose. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to S. C.
