The family of Joan Poinsel Ward, residing at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community, is saddened to announce her passing on December 4, 2024. Joan was born on February 15, 1925, in Cohoes, New York. She was the daughter of the late John F. Poinsel and Blanche Bellinger. She graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York with a Bachelor of Science degree. She worked for General Electric Company both in Schenectady, New York, and New York City. She later moved to Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for Randolph-Macon Women’s College. She moved to Bishop Gadsden in 1999.
Joan lived a full life, having traveled the world with her beloved husband Grant. She was a wonderful artist, often painting the images of the places they visited. She spent many hours volunteering in her community. She had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and loved to try new things.
She is survived by one son, David E. Ward, his wife Lisa, and three grandsons, Andrew Ward, Tyler and Christian Matthews; a nephew, Robert Reynolds (Grace), a niece, Barbara Woodall, and several great-nieces. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Edwin Grant Ward, and two siblings, Beatrice H. Poinsel and Marion B. Reynolds.
Palmetto Cremation Society will manage the arrangements. Interment will be in the Columbarium at Bishop Gadsden’s Labyrinth.
