John Edward Stewart, 75, of Charleston, SC, died Thursday, October 19, 2017. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Harbor View Presbyterian Church, 900 Harbor View Road, James Island at 2:00 p.m. Private family burial will follow at a later date.
John was born January 19, 1942 in Crawfordsville, IN, son of the late Edward Worrell Stewart and the late Mae Holland Stewart. After completing his engineering degree at Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1964, he served in the U.S. Army for three years. He then worked as an engineer for DuPont in Richmond, VA and the Bushy Park Plant until his retirement in 1999. After stints working for CertainTeed and teaching at Beta Tech, John ran an informal summer camp for his grandchildren.
John served as treasurer at Harbor View Presbyterian Church , and was known to preach memorable children's messages. He also served as a Boy Scout troop leader, and was a member of Toastmasters and the Scottish Society of Charleston.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Arleen Lloyd Stewart; four sons, William of Portland, OR, Eric (Linda) of Charleston, SC, Curt (Dawn) of Stuttgart, Germany, and Brent (Jennifer) of Cincinnati, OH; one daughter, Catherine Carter (T) of Greenwood, SC; three brothers, Frank (Geraldine) of Crawfordsville, IN, Kent (Kathy) of Goose Creek, SC, and Gary of Crawfordsville, IN; and eleven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of South Carolina or to the Boy Scouts of America.
