Juanmanuel Gómez, 52, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at his home in Charleston, SC. Juanmanuel was born in Bogotá, Colombia to loving parents Victoria and Hildebrando Gómez. After receiving his medical training at the Colombian School of Medicine and the National University of Colombia, he immigrated to South Carolina with his family in 1996, where, upon completion of his Internal Medicine training in 2002, he joined the Infectious Disease Division faculty as a Clinical Instructor. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2005. During this time, he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the MUSC Graduate School. In 2005 he launched the Medical University Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, which continues to be effective in improving patient outcomes and hospital safety, earning him a nomination for Hospital Medical Director of the year. Juanmanuel is survived by his wife Marcela; his children Juan David, Jorge Enrique, Mateo, and Alejandra; his parents Victoria and Hildebrando; his brother Alejandro, sisters Martha and Cristina; his nephew Francisco; and his nieces Lisa, Catalina, and Andrea. A service Mass will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 11:00am, at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 1106 Fort Dr., Hanahan, SC.
