Karen L. Gaskins

November 29, 1942 — October 30, 2024

Karen Herchenroeder Gaskins, 81, widow of the late Charles Lee Gaskins of Mt. Pleasant, SC, entered into eternal rest October 30, 2024. Karen was born November 29, 1942 in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of Eldred Glen Herchenroeder and Pearl Lavina Brewer Herchenroeder. The family moved to Longmont, CO in 1945, where she attended schools and graduated from Longmont High School and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. During high school, she sang in a quartet called “The Starlighters”. The quartet performed for many local venues and won the local “Stars of Tomorrow” contest. She worked for Dow Chemical Co. Rocky Flats Plant, Binks Research & Development in Colorado. Then in Charleston, she worked for the Charleston County School District and was a retired civil service employee from the Charleston Naval Shipyard and Charleston AFB, Combat Camera Squadron. She enjoyed life, loved her family and friends, loved all animals and nature, music, fishing, golf, bridge, and crafts. She loved Mt. Pleasant, but always held a special place in her heart for the canyons and mountains of Colorado and the Arizona desert. She spoke so often of her lifelong friends in Longmont, ice skating, snow skiing and time at the lakes.

She is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Gesling, Pamela Ponte, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Gaskins, brother Robert Herchenroeder, and granddaughter Heather Mae Lewis.

Karen may be gone but is never, ever forgotten. Join us as we come together to celebrate her on November 24, 2024 from 3:00-6:00 pm at the Charleston Rifle Club located at 2221 Herriot Street, Charleston, SC 29403. Please RSVP with her daughter Pam Ponte.
