Martin Hackbart Sr. CHARLESTON - Martin George Hackbart, Sr. was born May 11, 1939 in Beacon, New York to the late August and Miriam Hackbart. He was the second son of four children, August Hackbart, Jr., Peter Hackbart and Joanne Hackbart. Martin attended grade school through high school in Beacon, New York. He then served in the United States Army as a Clerk Typist carrying out most of his tour in France. He was later awarded a medal for Marksmanship and Good Conduct. He married Shirley Ann Smalls on April 10, 1971 and from that union had two sons, Martin George Hackbart, Jr. born May 7, 1975 and Simeon Andrew Hackbart, born January 4, 1982. Martin was baptized and became a Jehovah's Witness in 1982. Martin was very well known and loved in his community in the Bronx, New York and his hometown in Beacon, New York. Martin went above and beyond as a Leader, a provider and a wonderful, caring human being. He took great pride in being the Superintendent of the building where they resided for many years. He loved to sit outside by Fort Four Park, and socialize with his friends and neighbors. Martin loved all sports; some of his favorite teams were the Mets and the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 2010 the family relocated to Charleston, SC. Martin was known to give his all to whatever he chose to do. He was a very passionate man in both life and love. Martin entered into eternal rest on June 20, 2013. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Shirley; his sons, Martin, Jr., and Simeon and his wife Victoria; his mother and father -in-law; grandsons, Simeon, Jr., Matthew and Adam. A dedicated father and loving husband, Martin's legacy will live on and prosper through his Wife, Sons, Grandsons, family and friends he leaves behind. A memorial service will be held 11AM, Friday, July 5th, 2013 at Palmetto Cremation Society, 11 Cunnington Avenue, Charleston, SC 29405.
