Robert Cain Atkinson, Jr., died peacefully on Sunday, September 29th, at his home in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, after an extended illness.
He is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Elison; the children he adored, Robert Cain Atkinson III (Andres) and Brooke Atkinson Patteson (James); his sister, Susan Atkinson Gregory (Luke); and many more family members to whom he was a trusted and much loved uncle, brother-in-law, mentor, and friend.
Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Bob was a graduate of Oxford and Emory Colleges of Emory University where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting. He completed his Master of Taxation degree at Georgia State University and earned numerous professional designations. He was the founder and managing partner of his own wealth management and taxation firm in Atlanta, Georgia, which he led until his retirement. He was admired and valued by his clients and employees for his intelligence, integrity, trustworthiness, and concern for all aspects of their lives.
Bob gave his time and talents through serving on various boards of nonprofit organizations and received numerous accolades during his professional career. However, his personal relationships with family and friends were what he valued most. He was a devoted and loving husband and father and a wonderful brother, uncle, family member and friend. Those who knew him best remember his generosity and loyalty to those he loved. Bob was always available to celebrate good times or lend his great support to all during the more challenging ones. His refrain throughout his life, “How can I help?” exemplified his caring spirit and willingness to drop everything at a moment’s notice to help anyone in need.
He was an active person who loved to travel and was happiest when he was with his family – whether it be on the ski slope, at the beach, or in the comfort of home. In his retirement, he found great joy and purpose in his volunteer work at a local food assistance program. He shared a love of nature with Elison and was thankful to live on Seabrook Island where he was awed by the wonders of God’s creation.
A memorial service will be held Monday, October 7th at 11:00 am at Johns Island Presbyterian Church. Immediately following, there will be a visitation with the family and light luncheon at a private home. All are welcome to attend and further details will be available at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts in Bob’s memory be made to “Sea Islands Hunger Awareness Program - Blessing Basket Program,” P.O. Box 268, Johns Island, SC 29457 or to the “Dorothy J. and Robert C. Atkinson, M.D. Scholarship Fund” at Oxford College of Emory University, 801 Emory Street, Oxford, GA 30054.
