Russell Hutcherson Stout Jr.

Russell Hutcherson Stout, Jr. passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014. “Rusty” was born November 1, 1946 in Charleston, SC, the son of the late Russell H. Stout and Bernecia Britton Stout. He was a graduate of St. Andrews Parish High School, The Citadel and The Georgia Institute of Technology, and was a licensed Professional Engineer. He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany and Buffalo, NY, and was medically retired. He worked for the Corps of Engineers Charleston District and Soil Consultants before spending the remainder of his career teaching civil engineering at The Citadel. After 25 years he retired from The Citadel to pursue his passion of woodworking and was a fine craftsman. His beautiful furniture was the delight of family and many friends. A lifelong member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Rusty was strong in faith and service to others. He served as an Elder, Deacon and as a Stephen Minister and contributed in many other ways to the life and work of the church. At The Citadel Rusty was a beloved professor of civil engineering and received both the C. A. Medbery Award for Dedication to Teaching, and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for excellence of character and service to humanity. He was a member of the Engineering Honor Society of Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, American Society of Civil Engineers, and American Society for Engineering in Education. He served for 30 years as Secretary/Treasurer of the Loring K. Himelright Scholarship Foundation. He was a member of The Citadel Alumni Association and the Brigadier Club, and will be remembered for his faithfulness, courage, and strength. He is survived by his wife Linda Fleming Stout, sister Alicia Gail Stout, daughters Virginia (Ginny) Stout Hairston (Forrest) and Molly Stout Bullington (Matt), and his grandchildren Mary Kathryn Hairston, Sam Bullington, and Caroline Bullington. A memorial service for Russell H. Stout, Jr. will be Thursday afternoon, August 28, 2014 at 2 o’clock at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC. A reception will follow in Molly Wier Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston SC 29401 or The Citadel Development Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
