Sara Jane Barton, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted member of her community, passed away on November 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and service.
Born on October 24, 1943, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Sara was the daughter of John Horner and Bessie Tarrant-Horner and had four siblings, Bessie Horner-Grant, Marcus Horner, Claudia Horner-Rauch, and Roger Horner. She grew up in Dewey, Oklahoma, where she was a trailblazer from an early age, becoming the first female student allowed to enroll in drafting classes at Dewey High School—a testament to her pioneering spirit and determination. Sara also was a regular winner of Dewey's annual "smile" contest for having the overall best smile, with which she readily greeted everyone throughout her life.
Sara's life was marked by love, family, and dedication. She attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and married Lee House in 1963. Throughout her life as a military wife until 1976, she demonstrated resilience and adaptability, supporting her family through various relocations and challenges. She had one daughter Monica House-Hall and was grandmother to four grandchildren: Sheridan Hall, Anna Hall-Ransom, Eric Hall, and Claudia Hall-Young. Her family continued to grow, and she was blessed with nine great-grandchildren.
In 1979, she married Tom Barton and they lived in Ravenel, SC where Sara embraced her role as a stepmother to Michael Barton, whom she loved deeply, along with his wife, Candy and their four children and their spouses, Sean & Kennedy Barton, Kylie & Kasper Tribble, Camryn Barton and Devany Barton, who lovingly cared for her throughout her life changes and illnesses following the loss of her beloved Tom.
Professionally, Sara dedicated her career as a legal secretary, bringing her meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic to everything she did. Her passion for crafts was evident in her love for knitting, sewing, gardening, and cake decorating as well as many more. She found beauty in the simple things—African violets, frogs, hummingbirds, and swans, and she always appreciated a sunny day. She loved nature and animals of all kinds, but especially her little black poodles she had over the years.
Her spiritual life was most important to her. Sara was an active and devoted member of the West Ashley and Ravenel congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses, serving with her whole heart. Her congregation was more than a community—it was her family, filled with friends who meant the world to her.
Sara Jane Barton will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, generosity and unwavering love for her family and friends. She lived a life full of purpose, nurturing relationships, and spreading joy to those around her. She was always quick to help those in need and found great joy in giving to others.
She is survived by her siblings, Bessie Horner-Grant, Claudia Horner-Rauch, and Roger Horner, stepson Michael Barton, his wife Candy, her daughter, Monica House-Hall and husband Rick Hall, her eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and countless friends who considered her family.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life and the incredible impact she had on those who knew and loved her on Sunday, December 8th at 1pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3312 Bonanza Rd, Charleston, SC. You can also contact the family for information on accessing the program on Zoom.
