Sherry Smith Biggers, 77, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on March 16, 2024 with her husband, three children, brother, and sister-in-law by her side. Born in Bethesda, Maryland, on August 7, 1946, Sherry was the daughter of Ella Frances Smith (Norton) and Finous Smith. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Sherry grew up in Birmingham, Alabama where she graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class before completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at Auburn University. She received her Master's in Math Education from Duke University and entered into an extensive teaching career at various levels. She taught at Clemson University for over fifteen years and during this time she earned her PhD in Education from Clemson University in 2006. She also co-authored a Calculus textbook still used at Clemson.
While she was a well-loved teacher and scholar, Sherry's proudest achievement was being a mother to her three children and grandmother to her twelve grandchildren. She and her husband retired from Clemson in 2015 and settled in Charleston. Sherry was an excellent cook, seamstress, and artist. Her fondest memories were of time spent vacationing in Hilton Head Island.
For the past four years, Sherry resided at Mount Pleasant Gardens center for care of Alzheimer's Disease. Despite her limited verbal communication, Sherry was loved by all the staff. They described her as a champion hugger with a sweet disposition who managed to let her light shine up until the very end.
Sherry is survived by her husband of nearly 52 years, Sherrill Biggers, their three children: Lindsay (Brian Sanders) Green, Leigh (Jason) Chavis, and Allen (Meg) Biggers, her brother Larry (Pam) Smith, her sister-in-law Barbara Kimmel, and her mother-in-law Eleanor Biggers. Her grandchildren are Madeline, Ryan, Gavin, Katelyn, Tyler, Kaylee, Carson, Cameron, Everett, Bo, Charlie, and Henry.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org would be much appreciated. A family remembrance celebration will be held at a later date.
