Sidney Saville Riggs III

Sidney Saville Riggs, III, age 75, of Folly Beach, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023, at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents and his only son, Sidney Saville Riggs, IV. He is survived by his wife, Marsha C. Register Riggs, mother-in-law, Earlene Register, sister-in-law, Janice C. George, his 93 year old maternal aunt, Sarah Jo Powell, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sidney was born September 19, 1947, in Spartanburg, SC to his parents, Sidney Saville Riggs, Jr. and Frances Elizabeth Jones Riggs. He was a South Carolina native, having grown up in Summerville, South Carolina. He graduated in 1965 from Summerville High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and was also an active member of the National Honor Society. He subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Newberry College, and a Juris Doctorate Degree from University of South Carolina, School of Law. In the beginning of his career, Sidney served as Assistant Solicitor for Lexington County for 8 years. The majority of his career was serving in the South Carolina National Guard as a Judge Advocate. Sidney honorably served in the SCANG as an AGR for 24 years of active service where he made many life-long friends. During his tenure he earned the following Awards and Decorations: Legion of Merit; United States Meritorious Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Achievement Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass; Army Service Ribbon; South Carolina Active State Service Medal (20 years); and South Carolina Governors Unit Citation. Special Schooling or Training (Military and Civilian): University of South Carolina, School of Law, Juris Doctorate Degree; Newberry College, Bachelor of Arts Degree; Judge Advocate General Officer Basic Course; Judge Advocate General Officer Advance Course; Command and General Staff College; Law and Mobilization Workshop; Basic Labor Relations Course; National Guard Contract Law Course; and Legal Assistant Course.

 Fraternal and Civic Affiliations: Kappa Alpha Order and South Carolina Bar Association. Soldier awarded the South Carolina Guardsman Retirement Medal.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
