Stewart Hayes Newland, Jr., DDS

Stewart H. Newland, Jr. DDS, passed on October 8, 2014 at Warriors Walk Hospice, at the Dorn VA, Columbia, SC, surrounded by his devoted family. He was the dedicated and loving husband of Jacqueline Reed of 51 years, father to Shawna L. McCardle (Robert) of Columbia, SC, T. Reed (Heather) and John P. (Marielle), of Athens, GA, grandfather to Lucy, Trey, Lincoln, John Manuel, Beckett, and Welles Ayn. He was brother to Dorothy Cowan (James A.) of Round Rock, TX and brother-in-law to Susan Reed Touchstone of San Fransisco, CA, and uncle to nieces and nephews. After graduating from The University of Texas Dental School, Stewart was a caring dentist for thirty-seven years to patients in Alaska during his tour of duty with The United States Air Force, in private practice in Shreveport, LA, and later in Boston and Boxford, MA. He was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, MA. He will be remembered and cherished for his love of all people, for his adventurous spirit, entrepreneurial mind, interest in art, literature, technology, and sports. His children wrote, 'we will spend the rest of our lives making certain his grandchildren grow to know the man, husband, father, warrior and artist he truly was and continues to be.' A committal service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC, on October 24, 2014 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to WJB Dorn VA, 6439 Garners Ferry Rd, Voluntary Service, Columbia, SC 29209, attn: Warriors Walk, or Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, church or charity of your choice.
