Sue Ann Alexander

September 23, 1942 — July 23, 2024

Charleston

On July 23, 2024 Sue Ann (Burbage Mathewes) Alexander, 81, of Charleston, succumbed to her battle with dementia. Enveloped in compassion by the staff at Sandpiper Post-Acute, Mt Pleasant, SC and Amedysis Hospice, her passing was a comfortable, peaceful transition.

Born September 23, 1942 to Horace Everett and Mary Catherine (Nelson) Burbage, Sue grew up on Sullivan's Island, attended Stella Maris School and graduated from Moultrie High School. Marrying John Raymond Mathewes, Jr., she became a military wife and a mother of two boys, John and David Andrew (deceased). They enjoyed numerous assignments in country and overseas, exploring the fun, beauty, and uniqueness each had to offer.

Returning to her cherished Charleston, Sue worked in the medical field, the banking industry, but found true fulfillment as a real estate agent. With her outgoing and engaging personality, the real estate business came naturally to her. She had a keen insight in assisting clients, sellers and buyers, navigate the process to achieve their desired results.

Albeit getting seasick, Sue, with second husband, Charlie Alexander, enjoyed boating activities, often preparing "catch of the day" meals for family and friends. She so enjoyed cooking, entertaining, embellishing her yard (in spite of allergies), and helping others at a moments notice. An avid lover of animals, she adopted numerous pets, often taking in and caring for strays. Sue added a touch of spice to many lives but none more so than those of her family, whom she loved wholeheartedly. The memories, stories, and pictures will indelibly keep her alive in our hearts as we grieve her loss.

In death, Sue joins those that went before: parents, Horace Everett and Mary Nelson Burbage: brother, Horace Louis Burbage. She leaves behind her son, John R. Mathewes, III; grandchildren, Francesca and Makayla Mathewes; sister, Jade Mathewes; sister-in-law, Yvonne Burbage; nieces, Asia Mathewes, Jennifer Skirven; nephews, Nelson (Jacqueline) Burbage, Cullen (Amber) Burbage, George Skirven.

Interment to be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island, SC, August 19, 2024 at 10:00am for family and friends.

Donations to a no kill shelter are preferred to flowers in memory of Sue's abundant love for animals.
