Sylvia (Sima) Zealberg, born March 28, 1919, passed away on August 4, 2022. Sylvia, at the age of 103, was the matriarch of a family which stretched from Europe to Israel to the United States. Born in Piatra Neamt, Romania, Sylvia survived WW II and the holocaust in Europe. She met her future husband, Leo, who was in the US Army, while he was stationed in post-war Vienna, Austria. Leo and Sylvia married in 1950 and arrived in the USA that same year. They eventually settled in Philadelphia where their son Joseph was born. Sylvia was an accomplished seamstress who worked for a number of businesses in the Philadelphia area until her retirement. In 2014, Sylvia and Leo moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC to be closer to their son. Leo died that same year at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Hospital in Charleston and is buried in Beaufort SC at the Veterans’ National Cemetery, where Sylvia will also be interred.
Sylvia is survived by one son, Joseph, one grandson, Jason, two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ashton, and her nephew, Israel. Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Jewish Family Services of Greater Charleston.
