Wanda Faye Cook, 87 of Hanahan, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023.
Born on March 4, 1936 in Fleming-Neon, KY was a coal miner's daughter of (the late) Gertrude Fields (Breeding) and Leroy Fields. She was one of 13 growing up in rural Appalachia. Wanda married Dennis Clay in 1954 and became mother to Alan and Tamra. Following the death of Dennis in 1991, Wanda married Ted Cook in 2001. Ted passed away in 2006.
Wanda was the name given to her by the doctor who birthed her. However, since 1980 she was known by all as simply, Nanny. Nanny took her role as "Nanny" very seriously and was known to all as such. She cared for all she met, young and old as if you were her own. She never hesitated in welcome, love, and support.
Wanda is preceded in death by Gertrude Fields (Mother), Leroy Fields (Father).
Wanda is survived by a large loving family including Alan and Donna (House) Clay (Quartz Hill, CA), Sarah, Athena Rose, and Christian (Quartz Hill/San Jose, CA), Courtney, Zack, and Kayden (AZ), Tamra and David Setzer (Hanahan, SC), Jess, Clay, and Lilly (Hanahan, SC), Nick, Mia, Eliana, Oscar, and Carter (York, SC). She is also survived by two sisters Dallas and Olive plus one brother Don and many nieces and nephews. There are many more who count themselves as close family of Nanny. Wishing we could include them all, know that Nanny definitely considered you as such.
The Celebration of Life will be held at North Charleston United Methodist Church on July 27th. The family will receive family and friends at 1pm, with a celebration service to follow at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of York, South Carolina.
