Wilma Jackson Martin

Wilma Jackson Martin entered into eternal rest on November 10, 2014 surrounded by her family after a brief illness at the age of 93. She was a resident of Carter May Home where she had dear friends and a wonderful, loving staff. Wilma was born in Montgomery, WV on February 19, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Herman Jackson and Carolyn Putnam Jackson. She spent her childhood in Clifton Forge, VA where she was known for her accomplishments in athletics leading Clifton Forge High School to championships in basketball and tennis. She is preceded in death by her husband Lawell Foch Martin and her daughter Jane Davis Rowell (David). A woman of strength and determination, Wilma held the distinction of being one of the first female pharmacists in the state of South Carolina. She was also a registered nurse. She and her husband were a formidable team in providing medical care to the needy through collaborating with physicians in establishing clinics and providing medications often at no cost if necessary. Their devotion to service as they answered God’s call was also in having a ministry in the Southern Methodist Conference. They were instrumental in the founding of the West Ashley Southern Methodist Church and held many positions in fulfilling their desire to serve their Lord. Being a “Golden Grad” of the Medical University of South Carolina was a source of great pride for her. Many young pharmacy students were trained by Wilma & her husband, Dr. Martin, who were dedicated to their alma mater, MUSC. After retirement and relocating to Lake Marion in Pineville, SC where she met and established deep relationships with her Pineville friends, Wilma spent many hours cooking her famous dishes for her large family. Her lake house fondly known as “The Lake” was constantly filled with friends and family around her table laden with bountiful food. She leaves a legacy of grand stories filled with laughter and love to her beloved family. To the dear staff at Carter May she leaves fond memories with her being known as a character, Miss Wilma and Mama. Her family will forever be grateful to these very special ladies for their exceptional loving care, as well as to Lane Brown who was her special friend and devoted caretaker. She is survived by her daughters Wilma Householder, Dean Rowell (James) and Victoria Ingram (John). She has eight grandchildren, David Rowell (Melissa), Marty Rowell, Tara Byrnes (Court), Todd Householder (Laurie), Jason Rowell (Courtney), Elizabeth Griffiths (John), Jodi Martin (Sam) and Traci Mixon. She also has fifteen great grandchildren, Brooke, Ashley, Vance, Avery, Natalie, Charlotte, Andrew, Jacob, Penlan, Elizabeth, Putnam, Coleman, Camden, Jase and Foch. The family will receive visitors in Wellbrock Hall at the Cathedral on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 from 5:30 until 7:30. Her service will be held at 2:00 Thursday, November 13, 2014 in the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming Street. The family will receive visitors in Wellbrock Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412
